The first 500

This weekend I logged my 500th kilometre for the 2012 Gold Challenge, in a hot and humid gym at the bottom of my parent’s apartment block in Malaysia. I’ve since snuck in another workout before writing this post, so as it stands on 20 December, I’ve logged 524km 510m, towards an ultimate goal of 2012km.
I’m determined to fit in as many sessions as possible in the next month as I have to take a month or so off in February, while I recover from a loop excision operation (a slightly unpleasant procedure to remove pre-cancerous cells from ones cervix). As it happens, I’m supporting The Eve Appeal for my Gold Challenge, who are the UK’s only gynecological cancer charity. I chose them initially because I was impressed with how quickly my abnormal smear test results were dealt with – within three weeks I’d been sent to have a colposcopy (a more detailed examination and biopsy) – but now it seems I have an even better reason to support them!
So, I’m over a quarter of the way there, but I really need to up the anti if I’m going to log all 2012 kilometres by the start of the 2012 Olympics in seven months time, since it’s taken me nearly four months to achieve 500km! It’s especially difficult to get motivated here in Malaysia where it’s so hot and humid (even with aircon I’m melting within minutes), and the bike I’m using slips in its cogs more often than not – although I’m grateful that in the last week straps for the pedals have materialized!
I may be nice to myself in light of the unexpected cervix-related inconvenience, and give myself ‘til the end of the Olympics to complete the task, and hope my sponsors feel the same way!
